Hannah Comes to Pay Us a Visit

Tropical Storm Hannah is blowing up the mid-Atlantic today. Weatherman expectations are for it to pass Howard County around lunchtime. Two to four inches of rain and near gale force winds are predicted for central Maryland. (Though as I type this at 9 AM, the rain is light, the winds calm.) The Chesapeake and nearer the ocean will get worse. We need the rain; the wind I can do without. Folks living on the Chesapeake will have to contend with a 3 ft. storm surge.

Isabel in 2003 was the last tropical storm that really affected things. I suffered no serious ill-effects, but many folks in central Maryland went without power for a week or more. I doubt Hannah will measure up to Isabel, but I battened down the hatches here at Beckett House (such as they are) nonetheless.

My son, Andrew, drove to Richmond yesterday to visit a friend. Before leaving he asked if I thought returning home this afternoon was a good idea. Even though my brain was thinking "Jesus Christ!!! Are you out of your goddam mind? That's Hurricane Hannah out there!!!!! We almost died during Isabel and you want to drive up 95 during a cyclone!", I merely intoned that I thought staying in Richmond till Sunday morning would be the more prudent course.

My brain can be so histrionic.

Update: I don't know about other parts of Maryland, but around here Hannah had lost a lot of punch by the time she arrived. The eye of the storm passed east of here giving us primarily a rain event. The online weather station 2 miles away at Mt. Hebron High School recorded barely 1.75" of rain. For a tropical storm, there was very little wind. At 8:30 PM, the rain is long gone with just a few lingering breezes. We've had nor'easters that packed bigger wallops than Hannah. But I"m not complaining.
