Wednesday Dottles
First "Wednesday Dottles" of 2008. About time.
1. I discovered I can syndicate Plugs and Dottles on my Facebook home page. How cool is that? Now more people than ever can be subjected to my self-serving, puerile crap.
2. Whether to legalize slot machines in Maryland will be decided by referendum in November. With Labor Day fast approaching I'm sure a barrage of advertisements from the gaming industry will start. I've blogged about legalizing slots in Maryland before and I'll blog about it again. The whole thing is wrong, wrong, wrong. But I'm sure it'll pass despite what I want.
3. Crows are just the best birds. Check out this NY Times article. They're smart enough to recognize individual faces. Heck, they're probably smart enough to work at the MVA.
4. I watched The Counterfeiters last night. Meh. Sounds hard to believe but it's just a "meh". Maybe I've seen too many WW2 Holocaust movies. I give it 3 Netflix stars. I haven't seen a Netflix 5-star since April when I saw Adaptation. (Up tonight, by sheer coincidence: Judgment at Nuremberg.)
5. Speaking of Netflix, they need to change their rating system so I can give fractional stars to movies. Recently I gave The Savages 3-stars and Garden State 4-stars. They both deserve 3-and-a-half Netflix stars.
6. Michigan opens its football season Saturday with a new head coach and a new starting quarterback. Should be interesting. We're playing the Utah Utes. Not sure what a Ute is in Utah but in Brooklyn it's a young male about 18 years old.
7. Why are so many athletes tattooed?
8. Does anyone besides me think this t-shirt is funny? The shirt would have been perfect if it had the letter 'i' saying "Be rational" instead of the square root sign. Math humor... gotta love it. (Q: What's purple and commutes? A: An Abelian grape.)
9. Did you know that one of the Hawaiian Islands is privately owned? I didn't until I went to Hawaii. It's called Ni`ihau and only native Hawaiians live there. I could see it from the hotel I stayed at on Kaua`i. And because I can't go there, I really, really, really want to go there.
10. Senator Barack Obama will become the Democratic nominee for president tonight. I will support him even though I have some reservations I need to work through. I think Hillary Clinton would have been the better choice. Her speech last night only reinforced that notion. I've debated with my son whether the United States would sooner vote for a black man or a white woman for president. My heart tells me that it won't vote for either.

2) It will pass. Years from now, no one will be able to tell you why it didn't solve all of the problems it purports to solve but they'll be quick to tell you that they can't do without it now.
5) I liked Garden State, too.
3. We used to have crows around here all the time. About two years ago I spotted an estimated thousands of crows sitting silently in a large concrete lot at the state surplus less than a mile from my house. It was the middle of the night and I could see a very light fog in the glow of the amber vapor lights. The whole scene was like something out of a dream, or a nightmare. I have to admit it made my skin crawl a little bit. When they noticed me watching them, they took off almost all at the same time. Once they got above the lights into the dark, I could no longer see them. After that night, the crows have been gone from the neighborhood.
3. Wow that sounds amazingly eerie, Marie. And I always thought crows were everywhere. I wonder why they left your neighborhood?
5. At least Natalie Portman's performance was OK. For me she's still on the bubble as a credible actor. Peter Saarsgard was very cool in that movie.
