Fires from Space

NASA released this photo yesterday of the massive wildfires burning in California. The extent of the fires is mind-boggling.
The country's mind-boggler-in-chief will be in southern California today to view the devastation.

I suppose it's important, even symbolic, for the President to see the devastation firsthand, but I think it would be better if they waited until the crisis was a little closer to being resolved. He'll just be in the way today and California will also have to divert valuable resources to tend to him. This trip could have waited. There are more cynical interpretations of this trip but I'll leave that for others.
Those of us who are less than enthusiastic about POTUS think he's in the way everyday. Hopefully he'll assess the situation correctly.

That shot is really amazing. I flew to Chicago through Orange County (John Wayne) airport last week, and it crossed my mind as we flew down the coast that there hadn't been a big fire down there yet this year. Interesting if you look at the records to see when in the year the biggest, most damaging fires in the state have occurred. The big mountain wildfires -- in the Sierra and Coast Ranges -- typically happen in July and August. The big fires in coastal and mountain Southern California typically happen from mid-October into November; it's just the season for that pattern of winds and very, very dry heat.
