Wednesday Dottles

We haven't had a Wednesday Dottles since April. Enjoy.

1. I cable surfed into Britney's MTV performance the other night not knowing it was on. In under 10 seconds I knew. Not good. Not good at all.

2. A book I'm now reading - Body of Lies - is as we speak being filmed in Maryland. Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio star.

3. I hate to think this is Lloyd Carr's final season but it probably is.

4. And speaking of defeat, I'll bet the beach house there will be no undefeated top-25 college football teams at the end of regular season.

5. Overall, my favorite cracker is Triscuit. (Aside: have you ever known anyone who baked their own crackers?)

6. I picked up 6 life birds - black-headed grosbeak, spotted towhee, juniper titmouse, rufous hummingbird, broad-tailed hummingbird, and cave swallow - during my New Mexico vacation this summer. And I only birded two hours. I might also have had a pinyon jay but I can't convince myself I wasn't seeing an interior western scrub-jay. Sure wish I could have gotten a second look at that bird.

7. OK. I'm calling it. Right now. Today. So we can all go inside. (And remember you heard it here first.) John - I'm not black or female - Edwards gets the Democratic nomination and Mitt - I'm the kind of Mormon who only has one wife - Romney gets the Republican nomination. Fred Thompson is just too damn ugly to be president. He's like Lyndon Johnson ugly.

8. Two movies I am most eagerly anticipating this fall: No Country for Old Men and Into the Wild. In that order.

9. I excoriated Brick starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt a while ago. It was the movie - which really sucked - more than his performance. He's also in The Lookout which is a much, much, much better movie. (Another aside: Hairspray in the theater was very fun. Prediction: John Travolta gets a Best Actor nod.)

10. Be honest... before about a year ago had you even heard of tilapia?

3) Without a doubt. I don't think there's anything he can do to save it. LSU's Les Miles will replace him after the Tigers win the national championship in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. :)

4) Probably not.

6) I have had a Rufous at my feeder a few times. Too skittish for me to get a decent picture, though.

10) We've been eating tilapia for many years. Locals here use it in place of the much tastier speckled trout, which is the fish of choice in Louisiana, the Sportsman's Paradise. Speckled trout has a short season and a low limit. Tilapia is cheaper, freezes better, and is much more readily available and fish is in vogue these days.

3. Still too bad. Carr has had a good record at Michigan and he does many good things for the university other than coach football.

10. I never would have guessed. I thought tilapia was just what we were seeing because we ate all the orange roughy.

3) It really is too bad. Those excellent qualities mean nothing at a university committed to big time college sports. On the other hand, big time college sports generates a ton of money and some of that does trickle down into other university pursuits. It's a wash and Carr surely knew what he was getting into. He'll land on his feet. He's a quality coach. Things just got away from him. They'll beat Notre Dame tomorrow.

10) If you're ever in New Orleans, try the broiled speckled trout, trout menuire, or trout almondine at any one of our fine restaurants. The better restaurants here only serve it when it's fresh. You'll throw rocks at tilapia and orange roughy. Seriously.
