Still Here or Just Passing Through?

in , | | Comments (4)
Temperatures have been delightfully cool the past few days. Makes me optimistic that cooler climes are coming. Mid-September is right about when my ruby-throated hummingbirds take off. And with the really cool nights we've been having, I figured they were all in parts south. But I had a hummer feeding on my deck this morning where the temperature could not have been more than 50 degrees. Don't know if it was one I was feeding all summer or was just a passer-by.

But I wouldn't be surprised if that was the last one I'll see in '07.

They're starting to swarm my feeders. Still squabbling so they're not quite ready to head south yet. They start sitting side by side 7-10 days before they leave here. They drain the feeders when they start doing that. We've been unseasonably cool the last few days. A welcome respite.

I suppose we've seen the last of the humming birds as well.

Rob, you've got to get a photo of them sitting side by side. Around here they always squabble. I think they spend more time chasing each other away from the feeder than feeding.

Hopefully, there will be a better version of this before they leave CrabAppleLane this year: http://www.crabapplelane.net/roblog/archives/92604a.jpg

Wish I had gotten pictures of the swarms I had after Katrina. I had a 6-station feeder and an 8-feeder station feeder then. Every station was occupied on both feeders with two or three hovering and patiently at each one awaiting their turn. Was amazing. The only thing I enjoyed about the Katrina experience.
