I had a letter to the editor published in the Howard County section of the Baltimore Sun on Sunday. I was answering the "speak out" question are campaign signs useful or are they just clutter. I straddled the fence. You can check out my published ranting here as I rail against the minions of darkness.

Also check out this very cool picture of the East Coast taken by the Earth Observatory satellite during our recent heat wave. I love maps and aerial photos of this nature. This one shows the mid-Atlantic region from Connecticut to North Carolina. I spent 10 minutes trying to find Woodstock.

I eventually found the brown patch that I call my lawn.

What is worse than the little signs is the massive 4x8 signs near heavily travelled but still residential roads. I checked my local P&Z laws which cover signs and found the size and placement requirements. It turns out the total signage area allowed in a residental area in Harford is only 16 square feet. That is the total of all signs for each yard. That means only 4 of the little signs max per house and some of these houses have huge road footage. The county says they are swamped but have no problem with citizens removing violating signs. Time for some sign vigilante-ism.

Nice letter. Did they edit it? Our newspaper's sports editor did that to my letter many years ago and then responded to the changed one, forever putting me off to writing to the newspaper.

Love that picture. What a day *that* was.

Rob, there were no changes to the letter. They even kept the italics the way I had it.

Jimd, thanks for the info about what's happening up in Harford. I found the signage regulations for Howard online, but I couldn't really figure out how it pertained to political signs. As for sign vigilante-ism, I might already be guilty of that. Any commercial signs left around my neighborhood oftentimes wind up in my trunk if they're still there after the weekend.
