What's a Michigan Boy To Do?

in | | Comments (3)

That team from Columbus is playing that team from South Bend today in the Fiesta Bowl. I am sooooo conflicted. What's a Michigan boy to do? I hate both teams; I want them both to lose. I guess it could be fun to watch the game and hurl foul epithets at both teams and cheer the misfortunes of both. But I'd just as soon rip my arm off and beat myself with the bloody stump.

(And, yes, I understand there's a corporate sponsor for the Fiesta Bowl but until I'm paid to do so, I will never use the corporate moniker for any sports event or stadium.)

Boo to that team from Columbus. Double boo to that team from South Bend. Boo, boo, boo to you both.

Maybe the game will end in a 0-0 tie.

For me, the choice was easy. When the Buckeyes got rid of Woody Hayes, I no longer hated them. They were just another team in college football to me. Notre Dame has never been that and will never be that. They see to it. I don’t care for them much. Dates back to Ara Parseghian playing for a tie against Michigan State. They’ve provided some of my favorite moments in college sports. Like beating USC, 24-6, at halftime, then managing to lose, 55-24. Like Ara whining about Miami running up the score on the Irish on national TV as if his teams never did that against undermanned Army and Navy teams.

Being a Michigan alum, my distaste for the Columbus and Notre Dame teams runs deeper than who's the coach. It's more of a tribal thing. I will say that the South Bend team lost and a Big 10 team won last night has perked up my day immeasurably.

Possibly you could avoid watching the game.
